Spotted Dog Gold Mine, Mallacoota Inlet

These mine remnants are the only reminders of Mallacoota's gold rush days last century. There were more than 50 claims made in the district the Spotted Dog was the only mine that made a commercial success.

Access to the marked trail around the mine site is by boat to the Cemetery Bight jetty, then a short walk.

Track to site of Spotted Dog Gold mine, which was mined from 1895 to 1899. Several stories are told about it's name. One that a spotted dog was killed by a falling tree

and others of a fight between a koala and a spotted dog and a miner accidently shooting the dog instead of the koala.

Along the way, evidence of mine shafts (hles in the ground) can be seen.

Shafts here were generally dug to 100 feet before water seeped in from the lake.
