Mallacoota & District Historical Society

The Society covers Mallacoota, Genoa and Wangarabell and any other associated areas.

There are locations which were once vibrant where population has shifted and largely gone. The general area was once associated with gold mining. The earliest European migrants came via the Monaro as selectors. There is not a general record of those whom they may have displaced.

As a frontier society, Mallacoota & District relied on wood cutting, corn and pig raising, catching of fish and marketing of these products with some difficulty. The usual market for pigs was Eden.

From the 1920's, the area became a tourist attraction and later a nature park to preserve the natural beauty and assets. The area attracted those who were wealthy because the road only went as far as Gipsy Point. Records suggest that the going from ORBOST was lumpy. For many, the access was by boat. In times past, the lakes were navigable past Gipsy Point, indeed as far as Maramingo.

The area became a haven for writers and authors as well as artists. This tradition continues today. The Society meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 2pm at St. Peter's Vestry, Mallacoota. Special meetings can be arranged for those who are visiting. The Society is conscious that there are many unseen links in many places.
