The Mallacoota Gum was classified by the National Trust in 1982, as a tree of "rare localised distribution and aesthetic significance". There may possibly be less than 40 of these gums left in the world. Mallacoota Gums are thought to be natural hybrids of Eucalyptus cypellocarpa, the mountain grey gum and the Tasmainian blue gum.
