Gabo Island

At the extreme southeastern corner of Australia, this is the major navigation mark for the entire ocean going traffic in this part of the world. On the 20th April 1770, Captain Cook spent the night sheltered here after making his first sighting of Australia earlier that day at Point Hicks.

In present red granite lighthouse was built in 1862, replacing several earlier smaller and less permanent structures. The lighthouse is 47.5 metres tall and was built from rock found on the island. The island has several houses that can be rented for holidays through the Dept of Conservation and Natural Resources. The island has a Jetty on the northwestern side and a small airstrip. There is plenty of bird-life plus penguins and seals.
